CAVANAUGH: Joan Orlando Cavanaugh of Waterford, went to be with Our Lord on Thursday Jan., 12, 2017. She leaves behind her loving husband of 56 years, Thomas W. Cavanaugh. Two sons, Kevin T. Cavanaugh of Lowell, MA and his wife Ellen, Michael J. Cavanaugh of Simi Valley, CA. She also leaves behind a brother Maurice J. Orlando of Shrewsbury, NJ, two sisters Carole Orlando Hewitt of Kennesaw, GA and Ann Orlando Patsiga of Naples, FL. Joan was born in Pawcatuck, CT on April 1, 1937 to the late Maurice J. and Olga (Kozlowski) Orlando, Sr.. Joan, attended St. Michael’s Catholic School in Pawcatuck and Stonington High School, class of 1954 where she was a member of the National Honor Society. After graduation Joan worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and then as a legal secretary for various attorneys, the last being Suisman, Shaprio and wool in New London. Her hobbies included cooking, gardening, sports and reading. She was a big fan of UCONN Women’s basketball and the New England Patriots. She also loved to travel and especially loved their 5oth Anniversary trip to Italy and their trip to Hawaii. The family would especially like to give their thanks to Dr. Vanessa Johnson who had been treating Joan for her cancer. They would also like to thank the staff at Fairview and Lawrence & memorial hospital for her care. Her family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave. New London. The funeral will assemble on Saturday at 9 am and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Joseph church. Interment will follow in st. Marty Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory to The American Cancer Society.
