Alfred Joseph Illinger, 95, was a resident of the StoneRidge Community in Mystic, and passed away peacefully Sept. 16, 2022. Al was born June 25, 1927, in Norwich, to Alfred E. Illinger and Rose Schaff Illinger.

Alfred will be lovingly remembered by his four children: Joseph and Ann Illinger of Mystic, Kathleen Illinger of Southborough, Mass., Anne and Kirby Bray of Jupiter, Fla., and Scott Illinger of South Norwalk. He had five grandchildren: Craig Illinger, Suzanne Illinger, Christine Bray and husband Joseph Lombardo, Timothy Illinger and Magen Illinger; and one great-granddaughter, Palmer Lombardo. He is also survived by a sister, Arlene and her husband Howard Parkhurst of Niantic. He was predeceased by his loving wife Joanne; son David; brother Charles; and sister Cecilia.

He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy. He worked as an aircraft mechanic at Waterford airport, and then as a designer at Electric Boat for 41 years before retiring. His retirement allowed him to do what he loved most, which was spending time with his family and watching the UConn women’s basketball team.

The family would like to thank the StoneRidge community for being our dad’s home for the last eleven years. The community provided friendship, care and a sense of purpose.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at St. Patrick’s Church, 32 East Main Street, Mystic. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 280285, East Hartford, CT 06128 or www.cancer.org.
