Waterford — Viola Worobey, 91, of Waterford, entered eternal life Feb. 8, 2023. Viola was born Jan. 10, 1932, in New London, the daughter of the late Anthony and Anna (Zito) Santangelo.?She attended local schools in New London, and graduated from the former Chapman Technical High School, Class of 1950. She married her high school sweetheart John Worobey Sr. June 28, 1952; John passed April 24, 2021.?Viola retired from the New London Board of Education after many years, starting at the Little Red Schoolhouse and ending her career in the business office. After retirement, she was a volunteer for many years in the kitchen at the Waterford Senior Center. Viola loved cooking for the family, especially Sunday dinners where there was always room for one more at the table with plenty of leftovers to take home. Her specialty was Italian foods, with her spaghetti, meatballs, sausage and braciole being the family favorites. She was affectionately known as Noni to her grandchildren and their friends. They would stop by her house on the way home from school to enjoy her company and good cooking. Viola enjoyed her weekend getaways with John on their boat the “Lady Vi.” She also loved to dance and she and John could clear a dance floor. She can now once again dance the jitterbug with her husband in heaven.?She is survived by her three children and their spouses: John and Margaret Worobey Jr. of Cape Coral, Fla., Paul and Margaret Worobey of North Stonington, and Linda and Keith Jones of Waterford; seven grandchildren: John III, Laura, Paul, Matthew, Amanda, Kyle and Blair; and twelve great-grandchildren; two siblings, Michael Santangelo of Quaker Hill, and Vincenza (Hugh) Shannon of New London; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Pasquale Santangelo.?Her family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. The funeral will assemble at 9 a.m. Tuesday and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, followed by Interment in St. Mary Cemetery.
