OCCHIONERO: Norma Occhionero, 93 of Waterford entered eternal life on June 23, 2017, unexpectedly at her home. She was born Aug. 19, 1923 in New London, the daughter of the late Curio and Mary (Porsini) Trevisani. Norma attended local schools and graduated from the former Chapman Tech High School. She married Angelo Occhionero, on May 22, 1943 at St. Joseph Church in New London. They were married for 72 years until his death on April 24, 2016. Norma was employed for many years at the former Jennings Department Store in New London, which later became Howland and Steinback of Waterford, retiring when Steinbeck closed. Norma grew up in “The Fort,” a neighborhood in New London. She was a life member of the “Little Hall” and later the ”Big Hall,” which became “the Italian Dramatic Club”. She enjoyed her weekly bowling league, at the Waterford Family Bowl. She hosted every holiday at her home for the past 35 years, with her big family of over 30 people. Norma made sure everyone got together to make the cuplito. She is survived by three children, Ora Dupont and husband Roger, Lori Ryan and husband John, John and wife Liz Occhionero, all of Waterford. Seven grandchildren; Kelly Getty and husband Dean, Roger Dupont and wife Marsha, Nicole VanOverloop and husband Garon, Mellissa Hume and husband Tom, Heather Buscetto and husband Mike, and Kristin Occhionero all of Waterford, and Justin Volpe and wife Angel, of New York. Step grandchildren; Kenneth LeCara and wife Leah, Andrew LaCara. Beloved nieces, Marilyn & Steve Quayle, Lesley and Michael Gray, and Pete Hallissey. Also her twelve great grandchildren who are going to miss their “Noni”. She was predeceased by two siblings; George Trevisani and Lenora Roberts. Norma will be greatly missed by her whole family who loved her dearly.
Her family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, from 5pm to 8pm at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave. New London. The funeral will assemble on Friday at 9 am, and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at St. Joseph Church, New London. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Any donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
