Norbert “Harry” F. Hammer Jr., 91, Lady Lake, Fla., passed away peacefully at home on July 17, 2016.

He was born May 19, 1925, in Pensacola, Fla., to Norbert F. Hammer Sr. and Margaret Benjamin. Norbert was a retired World War II Navy veteran. He served in the submarine service at Pearl Harbor as a gunner’s mate during the war. It was during this time that Norbert lost 97 per cent of his hearing.

He married Jessie Giampetro in 1949, and they had four sons, Bert, Paul, Mike and Mitch, who survive him. Norbert is also survived by his loving sister, Marilynn Luberto, who called him “Bob”; his grandchildren, Brian, Kevin, Jessica, Jaryd, Billy and Kimberly; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Zachery, Loren and Evalynn; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His wife, Jessie, passed away from cancer in 1987.

After retiring from the Navy, Harry worked for the U.S. Postal Service in New London. He moved to Florida in 1994 to be near his sister where he spent his remaining years. One of Harry’s most memorable experiences is traveling from Paris to Istanbul on the Orient Express in 2005.

Norbert will be interred at the Massachusetts National Cemetery with full military honors.

Arrangements are entrusted to Beyers Funeral Home and Crematory, Lady Lake, Fla.
