Nancy Dunton Thomas, 58, left us all peacefully on Sunday, November 20th, 2016 with her family by her side. Known to many children as “Miss Nancy,” she was a Music Instructor at Community Music School in Centerbrook, the Director of The Kate Summer Music Camp in Old Saybrook, the Organist and Music Director at Crossroad Presbyterian Church and a piano teacher to numerous Waterford-area students.

Born on September 17th, 1958, Nancy grew up on the south shore of Long Island on Great South Bay, spending her youth at the beach, in the family pool, and sailing from Bayberry Yacht Club in many Cottontail Class sailboat races. Growing up on the ocean instilled within Nancy a love of the water that stayed with her throughout her life. Life on the beach and on the family boat brought peace, comfort and tranquility to Nancy.

Nancy’s love for music began at a very young age, taking piano lessons and becoming active in the Islip school music programs. Her love of the piano and traveling took Nancy to Vienna, Austria during her junior year of college at the State University College of New York at Fredonia. She studied piano at the Vienna Conservatory of Music. Vienna also served as a base for travels to surrounding European countries during the year, including a trip to Rome during Holy Week. If anybody needed a pianist to accompany them, Nancy was always willing to patiently donate her time and energy. Nancy loved to attend concerts and was the page-turner for the pianists at Musical Masterworks and the Essex Winter Series chamber music venues.

Nancy loved pets, particularly dogs, and enjoyed spending time in her perennial garden, enjoying the seasonal blooms and tending to the flowers. Along with her passions for gardening, her obsession over decorating the family Christmas tree will always be remembered. The Thomas’ tree was known as one of the best in town.

Nancy had a kind, loving and nurturing nature and a great sense of fun and laughter. Her greatest pride and joy was her family: Wade, her husband of 33 years, their daughter Jennifer and their son Jonathan, who will all miss her terribly. Nancy is also survived by her mother, Marjorie Dunton and her sister, Susan Dunton, both of Concord, New Hampshire and her brother Stephen Dunton of Broomfield, Colorado. She was also a devoted friend who valued the many close friendships she developed over her lifetime.

Calling hours will on Friday, November 25th, 2016 from 4 P.M. – 7 P.M. at the Impelliterri-Malia, Inc. Funeral Home at 84 Montauk Avenue in New London, Connecticut. A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held at the New London Ocean Beach Park in the Port and Starboard Room at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, November 26th, 2016 with a luncheon following the celebration. Spreading of her ashes and internment of her ashes will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Nancy’s honor to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
