Just found out the sad news. Mike was one of the first people I met when I was a terrified freshman at Georgetown, and he welcomed me into the Chess Club. He reawakened my interest in science and ironically convinced me to switch from linguistics to pre-med, which in those days meant I had to leave Georgetown (which did not let women into the College of Arts and Sciences) and go to GWU, so we lost contact. Mike’s love for literature and music gave the lie to the idea that scientists had to be “geeks” who looked down on the humanities. We had seasons’ tickets to the symphony and took Paul Hume’s opera class together. I still think of him when I hear “The Moldau” to which he introduced me. So many beautiful memories of happy times, long philosophical talks (and arguments!), and walks down M Street to play chess with his Armenian friend “Mr. Pech” who had a store there. I have followed his career and achievements with delight—he truly fulfilled our hopes for him. I searched his name tonight and was hoping to see yet another highlight and instead found his obituary. The numbness is dissolving into pain so I will have to close, but please know that I am grieving along with you and simultaneously rejoicing in a life well-lived. May we all meet again in Joy.

Mike was a Hartford Hospital surgical residency surgeon. He like his friend,Tony Toledo,MD moved on to practice in New London maintaining and setting a standard of excellency and leadership well recognized throughout Connecticut. As a surgeon trained as they were in general surgery at the Hartford Hospital I am proud to say we share that pedigree. I realize Mike was much more than a surgeon. And his influence for the betterment of his community lives on. A life well spent, I salute you, Miecrylow Deren, MD.
