Born and raised in Newark, N.J., the daughter of the late James and Celeste (Giantomasi) Oppido, she graduated from Arts High School in 1961 and Clara Maass Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1965.

She married Alfred Malchiodi Jr. in 1968, her husband of 43 years, who predeceased her. They raised their family in East Lyme, creating a home and beautiful memories filled with love and laughter. Tillie was involved with many town organizations and was very active in her children’s activities.

For many years she worked as a nurse in the office of Dr. Marchand in New London. Tillie loved to travel, and along with her husband, planned many family vacations for her children and grandchildren. Her personality, smile, strength, friendship and kindness will be missed by those who knew her.

Tillie is survived by her four children and their spouses, Lori (Joe) Pagliaro of Branford, Lynn (Carlton) Cayward of Tolland, Liza (Tom) Nowicki of Tolland, and Michael (Andrea) Malchiodi of Columbia, Md.; her nine grandchildren, Daniel and Nicole Pagliaro, Olivia, Jackson and Maria Cayward, Julia and Allison Nowicki, and Carina and Alexander Malchiodi; her sister, Ann D’Antonio of Nutley, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also predeceased by her sister, Joan Langione.

Her family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on today, June 1, at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. Family and friends are asked to gather at 10 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday at St. Joseph Church, 17 Squire St., New London. Interment will be private.
