New London — Mary Lu (Douton) Mariano, 91, formerly of Mahan Street, New London, entered eternal life Nov. 13, 2021, in the company of her loving family. She was born Oct. 22, 1930, in Waterford, the daughter of the late George and Christina (Brown) Douton.?Mary Lu grew up in the Pleasure Beach Area of Waterford and graduated from the former Williams Memorial Institute. She was united in marriage, to C. Anthony “Tony” Mariano on July 10, 1948, in St. Joseph Church, Tony predeceased her May 9, 2003. Mrs. Mariano enjoyed her employment at the Shaw Mansion and in central services at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. She was a communicant of St. Joseph Parish, where she was also a Boy Scout and Girl Scout Leader. Mary Lu loved to cook and bake and made all of her children’s wedding cakes. Later in life she was fortunate to travel and to enjoy UConn Girls Basketball games with her companion Bob Chabot.?She is survived by her sister Betty Meyers of California; seven children, Tony Mariano of Arizona, Sherry (Brian) Wright of Stonington, Michael (Sue) Mariano of Montville, Pattie Skeens of Massachusetts, John (Donna) Mariano of Waterford, Mary Jo (Thomas) Muscarella of Oakdale, and Tina Norton of Groton; grandchildren, Angela, Raymond, Jeffrey, AJ, Melanie, Kevin, Tyler, Chrissy, Mallory, Olivia and Kyle; 16 great-grandchildren and three great-greatgrandchildren. She was predeceased by her grandson Randy Mariano; daughter-in-law Suzanne Mariano; and eight brothers.?The family would like to give a special thanks to her caregiver Tamie and to her son John and daughter-in-law Donna for the care they provided her in the last year and a half of her life.?Her family will receive relatives and friends from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, at the Impellitteri – Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. The funeral will assemble at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, at Impellitteri -Malia Funeral home and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church. Interment to follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Donations can be made in her name to Catholic Charities or Alzheimer’s Association.
