Waterford – Juanita (Hales) Miller, 81, of Waterford, passed away Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born on Dec. 6, 1934, in Wilmington, N.C. Her parents, Mary Gore Chambers and James Hales and her stepfather, Bruce Chambers, predeceased her.

Juanita married Kermit “Joe” Miller Jr. on Sept. 29, 1956, at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in New London.

Juanita graduated from New Hanover High School in Wilmington in 1953. She started her career with Southern New England Telephone Co., in 1952, earning the title of Miss Voice and Courtesy in 1963. Juanita served as a telephone operator for 44 years before retiring as a supervisor in 1996. Juanita enjoyed puzzles, attending her sons’ and grandchildren’s dancing and sporting events, spending time with her family by the pool, and cheering on her beloved Red Sox, Patriots and UConn Huskies.

In addition to her husband, Juanita is survived by her brother, James Hales of Pensacola, Fla.; and her sons and their wives, Glen and Ann Miller of Waterford, Kevin and Gail Miller of Quaker Hill, and Bruce and Diane Miller of Waterford. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Kimberly and Erin Miller, Emily and Amy Miller, and Ryan and Rachel Miller.

She was also preceded in death by her brother, Houston Hales, and her sister-in-law, Mazie Hales.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, at First Baptist Church of Waterford, 105 Rope Ferry Road, Waterford. Interment will be in Jordan Cemetery.
