MCCARTHY: James (Shay) P. McCarthy, Jr. 78 of Quaker Hill, entered eternal life on May 31, 2022 in the company of his loving family. He was born Aug. 2, 1943 in Norwich the son of the late James (Jim) and Mary (Hartnett) McCarthy, Sr. Moving to New London at an early age, he attended local schools, graduating from New London High School, class of 1961. He started McCarthy Heating Oil with his parents in 1961, was joined by his brother Joseph (Joe) in 1968, by his son Michael in 1986, and then by his daughter Kelly in 2004 and more recently grandson, Brendan. Due to the hard work and dedication of the McCarthys and their employees, the company just celebrated its 60th anniversary. He served in the CT National Guard for six years. He was united in marriage to the former Joan Tanajewski, on Sept. 5, 1964 in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Mrs. McCarthy survives him. He was active in the Quaker Hill community; coached in Waterford North Little League, sponsoring McCarthy Oilers, and the Charms. He was a volunteer with the Quaker Hill Fire Dept. and was acting Fire Commissioner for over 10 years. He served on the Board for Liberty Bank and the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church’s Council. Shay loved going to Florida twice a year with Joan where he spent time all of his time fishing and enjoying the company of their close friends who were considered his second family. Beside his beloved wife Joan of nearly 58 years of devotion, he is survived by his children; Michael McCarthy of Oakdale, Kelly McCarthy of Quaker Hill, Shannon Goldstein and her husband Ken Goldstein of East Windsor. He adored his grandchildren, Lindsay, Brendan, Brentt, Logan, Chase, Kaden and great grandson Reid. Seven siblings survive him; Patrick McCarthy of CA, Joe McCarthy of Quaker Hill, Terry McCarthy of Niantic, Mary Ellen Deurr of FL, Noreen Kepple of Stonington, Eileen Boyce of Waterford and Cathy McCarthy of Pawcatuck; and one sister-in-law Marianne Vlaun and her husband Fred of Waterford. His family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. Family and friends may gather for a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday at 11 am in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 63 Old Norwich Rd. Quaker Hill. Interment in St. Mary cemetery, New London. The family would like to extend their appreciation for the wonderful care he received at Crescent Point, Niantic and with Hospice.
