Fay Ellen Toohey Cavan, 88, of New London, CT passed into eternal rest on Thursday, August 4. She was the beloved wife of Materno “Mutt” J. Cavan. They were married for 64 years. She was the daughter of Eileen Toohey Caronia and Donald Toohey, Sr. who proceeded her in death.

 

Fay was a woman ahead of her times, a working mom and baseball coach of her son’s minor league team in the 60’s! Family was everything to her. Outside of her family, Fay worked at L&M hospital where she met her husband in the emergency room. After they married, she worked for ABC Film and Mystic Color Lab for 16 years followed by Analysis & Technology where she worked in Administrative Security for 13 years. In between she spent time with her grandsons and their friends who all knew her as “Tutu”, grandmother in Hawaiian. Fay attended WMI and then later graduated from New London High School in 1955.

 

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sons, Bruce Cavan and Scott Cavan (Lucille), three grandsons: Ryan (Heather), Shaun (fiancée Stephanie) and Kai Cavan and two great granddaughters, Olivia and Payton. Fay is also survived by her brother, Donald Toohey, Jr, Kai Cavan’s mom, Melissa Mettler, brother-in-law Paul Cavan, sister-in-laws: Edeletrudis (Adele) Mcaviney, Rebecca Davalos (Deigo), Inez Tokashiki, Charlene Cavan and many nieces and nephews.

 

She was proceeded in death by her sisters Patricia Toohey Barbour (Donald) and Colleen Toohey Will, her brother-in-laws: Delfino Cavan, Bonafacio Cavan, Nazarus Cavan and Custudio Cavan and sister-in-law, Anna Barbara Cavan Bernil.

 

The family will welcome family and friends for a viewing on Wednesday, August 10th from 9-11am followed by a funeral home service, all held at Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. Interment will be private.
