Waterford — Eleni “Helen” Igoumenos, 83, of Waterford, entered eternal life Friday, Feb. 25, 2022, in the comfort of her home with her loving family. She was born Feb. 16, 1939, in Plesio Thesprotias Epirus, Greece, the daughter of the late Theodoros and Angeliki Simos.
As a young woman, she learned to hand-knot carpets on a loom and had a passion for knitting and crocheting blankets and things that she loved to give away. She loved working in her garden, cooking and baking, and spending time with her large family and many friends, who all knew her as a generous and loving person.
She came to the United States, in 1970, to Worcester, Mass. She was married to her devoted husband Vasilios Igoumenos Jan. 30, 1972, and they settled in New London. Together they owned and operated Alexandra’s Family Restaurant in Willimantic, for many years and later owned and operated Seaview Pizza in Niantic, for 12 years.
She is predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Vasilios. She is survived by her daughter Alexandra of Waterford; her sister Katina and William Pappas of Worcester; her brother Angelo and Connie Simos of New London; and her brother Kostas and Litsa Simos of Igoumenitsa, Greece; and many nieces and nephews.
Her family will receive relatives and friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, at St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church, 200 Hempstead Street, New London, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment to follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church, New London.
