HAPIS: Catherine Hapis peacefully entered eternal life at her home in New London, CT on Dec. 30, 2022.  Born October 2, 1928 in New Britain, CT, Cathy was the daughter of the late James and Nafsika (Diafa) Giagios.  She grew up in Southington, CT graduating from Southington High School and later attended NYU School School of Music.  Moving to New London in 1962 with her first husband Steve, she lived a fulfilling life.   Cathy was a beautiful soprano voice for many years in the church choir at St. Sophias and active in local theater groups including the Pfizer Players and the Footlighters.  She was always on the go either at work, travelling or involved in various social and church activities as well as being a loving Yiayia to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Cathy’s working career began at an early age, working in her parents’ candy store in Southington.  She was employed for many years by Janny Montgomery Scott, later working at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital as an administrative assistant, a job she loved.  Cathy will be greatly missed by her husband Irwin Ganson, two children; Jim (Joan) Hapis and Stephanie (William) Mickle both of Old Lyme, CT; her sister Dora Georgeady of Pawcatuck, four grandchildren; Caryn, Elana, Steve and Ben, and five great-grandchildren; Colin (12), Ruby (3), Miles (2), Amber (1), and soon to be great-granddaughter.  She was predeceased by her daughter, Elaine Hapis-Burke and sister, Tillie Zingus.  Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday (Jan. 4), at 11am at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 200 Hempstead St., New London.  Her family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to service.  Interment to follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers donations in her memory can be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 101 Ceterpoint Dr., Suite 107, Middletown, CT 06457, or st. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, New London, CT.
